Mandalay Ruby, the 48.019 carats Burmese Ruby, cushion cut ruby, flawless with excellent transparency and an intense red color, very close to the pigeon’s blood red color.
Believed to be a pre-1890 gemstone, it was set to be auctioned at a pre-sale estimate of $15 million on October 18th, 1988, at Sotheby’s auction house in New York. The Mandalay Ruby was the largest ruby ever presented at an auction, but unfortunately there were no bidders for this fascinating gemstone. Though attempts were made to associate any historical value with the exceptional gem but the they did not work as expected. Then this Ruby disappeared & has never resurfaced again. The current whereabouts of the gem is unknown.
This is probably the only known fine faceted Natural Unheated Ruby of its size with this color & exceptional transparency.
Where do you think is the gem now? Anyone with a clue, help us out.

I think it' like the typical "cozy" murder plot that has been used by murder mystery authors for years. The answer most probably lies in the inner circle of people who handled it. Look there Sherlock.
