Antique Ruby and Diamond Ring of Duchess of Portland is set in center with 9.20 carats, Natural, Pigeon's blood-red color, highly transparent, circular-shaped Ruby of Burmese origin. This Ruby is flanked by pear-shaped Diamond on each side along the shoulder of the plain hoop mount.
The flat shape and irregular outline of this Ruby suggests that it may have been adapted by Duchess Winifred from a 17th century ancestral jewel. The flat pavilion of this Ruby suggests that it might have originally been set in a tiara or crown. It was and still is common for royals to recreate new pieces of jewelry from gemstones they already own set in other items.
This important royal ornament topped the list of purchase prices at the' Jewels - The London Sale' auction by Christie's fetching a sum of $3.3 million!
